Measurement and experimental simulation of internal flow in gas turbine engines using wind tunnels and other measurement equipment


experimental activities for GTE turBines:

  • Research and experimental development of axial turbine stages using air turbine test rig (“cold-flow test“)
  • Detail steady/unsteady measurement of  flow fields behind the stator  and the  rotor using non-stationary pressure probes
  • Development of measurement devices:  design of the probe manipulators and miniature pressure probes for cold-flow testing, upgrade of the existing test rig up to 1.5 turbine stage, the basic design for two-stage turbine testing
  • Pressure measurement on prismatic blades cascades, measurement of basic characteristics (energy loss coefficient, outlet angle), and static pressure taps on blade channel
  • Measurement of loss and frequency characteristics in machine flow path
  • Pressure measurement of turbine vanes
  • Mass flow measurement by standard orifice plate
  • Possibility of flow visualization
  • Calibration of both pressure and wire probes for measurement in turbine test rigs



Tunnels for blade cascades measurement (LM):

  • Tunnel for blade cascade aerodynamic characteristics measurement (blade height 100 mm)
  • Static pressure measurement on blade surface (static pressure distribution in blade channel)
  • Flow visualization using shadowgraph and Schlieren methods with Zeiss 80 optics
  • Mach number at blade inlet: 0.1 to 0.98, max. pressure ratio 8, max. mass flow 7kg/s
  • Reynolds number range: 0,06x106 – 1,2x10

Tunnels for turbine wheels measurement (TU):

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of stator wheels, aircraft engine assemblies, gas and steam turbines
  • Integral characteristics measurement on dynamometer, steady/unsteady measurement of flow fields behind stator and rotor
  • Possibility of change the inlet conditions (turbulence intensity, boundary layer thickness)
  • Mach number at blade inlet: 0.1 to 0.98, max. pressure ratio 8, max. mass flow 7kg/s
  • Reynolds number range: 0,06x106 – 1,2x106

Mass flow measurement (using orifice plate) CT500:

  • Mass flow measurement using standardized orifice plate
  • Measurement of loss and frequency characteristics in machines´ flow path
  • Determination of flow meter characteristics
  • Detailed measurement of velocity field with comb sensor
  • Max. flow rate 15 kg/s
  • Mass flow measurement uncertainty of 0.6%

Other equipment:

  • Test rig for measurement of through-flow characteristics of internal recirculation channels at centrifugal compressor leading edge.
