VZLÚ se aktivně účastní evropských projektů výzkumu a vývoje, zejména Rámcových programů EU (RP EU). Obecným cílem těchto program je prohloubení mezinárodní spolupráce a sdružení výzkumných a vývojových kapacit k celkovému zefektivnění výzkumných činností.
VZLÚ slouží jako Oborová kontaktní organizace pro letectví a kosmonautiku s cílem zvýšit účast českých subjektů v RP EU. VZLÚ vítá v této souvislosti návrhy na spolupráci v RP EU a v dalších programech.
VZLÚ se účastní na mnoha mezinárodních výzkumných projektech z různých technických oblastí jako aerodynamika, aeroelasticita, pevnost konstrukcí, vývoj a aplikace kompozitních materiál v letadlových konstrukcích apod. V současné době patří VZLÚ mezi nejaktivnější české organizace v RP EU v oblasti letectví.
